Franklin Field is a historic stadium in the heart of Philadelphia. Now home to the University of Pennsylvania's Penn Relays, the stadium opened in 1895 and is considered the oldest stadium operating for football.

Vector received the 2022 ICRI Award of Merit in the Historic Category and the 2022 Project of the Year from the ICRI Delaware Valley Chapter for our work on the project.

The Problem

Corrosion was causing spalling and deterioration of the field's concrete grandstands. The main culprit of the steel corrosion issues was low concrete cover, resulting in carbonation of the concrete around the reinforcing steel and creating a corrosion cell. Replacing it over such a large area would be difficult and expensive.

Our Solution

We used Custom Galvashield® CC galvanic anodes and installed them in drilled holes throughout the stands to mitigate the ongoing corrosion. Galvashield® XP2 Anodes were used around the perimeter of any concrete repairs to stop the risk of the halo effect damaging the concrete around the repairs.

The Result

Due to the thin-depth concrete design of the stand, we developed a custom anode that would fit the need of the structure without sacrificing service life. Our installation methods also allowed our work to be completed in different phases to limit disruption of activities at the stadium.

The inclusion of a monitoring system in the repaired structure will allow the owner to plan when future maintenance work might be required.
