MassDOT Parking Garage

MassDOT Parking Garage

Boston, Massachusetts, United States
Two-level underground concrete parking structure serving a critical state facility.
Work Types: ICCP
Owner: Massachusetts Department of Transportation
Contractor: STRUCTURAL

Located in downtown Boston, the MassDOT parking facility is an essential asset that serves as the only dedicated garage for agency employees. When corrosion began to threaten the structural integrity of the two-level, below-grade structure, a long-term solution was required, one that could be executed while keeping the garage operational.

The Problem

The garage exhibited widespread corrosion due to water infiltration, chloride exposure, and the limitations of prior short-term repairs. As corrosion of embedded reinforcement progressed, concrete deterioration became increasingly visible. Complicating the challenge, the garage had only a single two-way access point, limiting traffic flow and construction staging during repairs.

Our Solution

To address both the active deterioration and long-term durability goals, a phased repair strategy was developed. The work included targeted concrete restoration, waterproofing, and the installation of an impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system across over 52,000 square feet of the structure. The ICCP system included remote monitoring capabilities, allowing for ongoing performance tracking with minimal maintenance demands.

The Result

The project was completed without safety incidents, all while the garage remained active. With ICCP now in place, the structure is protected against future corrosion, reducing long-term maintenance needs and extending the garage’s service life by more than 30 years.
