Silver Springs Platform

Silver Springs Platform

Silver Springs, Maryland, United States
The Silver Springs platform restoration supports WMATA’s evolving transit network by preparing a decades-old structure for integration with Maryland’s new Purple Line.
Work Types: Galvanic Anodes
Owner: WMATA
Consultant: Atkins
Contractor: Maryland Transit Solutions (MTS), a joint venture between Dragados USA Inc. and OHL USA Inc.

Originally constructed in the late 1970s, the Silver Springs platform is a vital part of Maryland’s WMATA Metrorail system. Now slated to serve as a key transfer point on the new Purple Line light rail, the platform is undergoing strategic upgrades to support decades of continued service and increased transit demand.

The Problem

As part of a major restoration effort, new concrete infill was placed to support columns for the Purple Line track. However, the interface between this new concrete and the original platform posed a corrosion risk due to possible chloride contamination from years of winter de-icing. Without intervention, this could compromise structural integrity, shorten service life, and lead to costly future repairs.

Galvashield® XP4 anode installed on rebar

Our Solution

We implemented a targeted corrosion protection strategy using discrete embedded Galvashield® XP4 galvanic anodes. Installed at the perimeter of the new concrete infill, these anodes deliver localized cathodic protection to the reinforcing steel, preventing corrosion at the vulnerable interface without treating the entire platform offering both precision and cost-efficiency.

The Result

This proactive solution extended the service life of the restored platform by over 20 years while avoiding costly reconstruction or operational disruption. By addressing corrosion at the source, WMATA and Maryland Transit Solutions safeguarded a critical piece of infrastructure as it transitions into a high-traffic node for both Metrorail and the Purple Line, ensuring long-term reliability for the region’s growing transit network.
