For the revitalization of the State Theatre — the last remaining large-scale movie palace in Hong Kong — Fosroc Galvashield® XP anodes were installed to protect its distinctive flying buttress structure from corrosion. The system’s 20-year service life helps ensure the continued preservation of this cultural landmark.

The Problem


Opened in 1952 as the Empire Theatre, the State Theatre is an architectural and cultural icon in Hong Kong’s North Point district. Its distinctive parabolic exoskeleton truss, known as the flying buttress, is central to the building’s heritage value. After decades of exposure to Hong Kong’s humid, marine-influenced climate, the reinforced concrete showed signs of deterioration from corrosion of the embedded steel. Without intervention, ongoing degradation would threaten both the structure’s integrity and its preservation as a historic landmark.

The Solution


To address active corrosion and reduce the need for ongoing repairs, Fosroc Galvashield® XP galvanic anodes were selected. Installation involved embedding the anodes within targeted repair zones to arrest corrosion and prevent new damage from forming around the treated areas. The system was designed to provide a long-term, low-maintenance corrosion protection strategy, extending the building's legacy by at least another 20 years.

The Result


The Galvashield® XP system offered a durable, cost-effective solution that met the client’s preservation goals while minimizing disruption to the structure’s unique architectural features. By protecting the flying buttress from ongoing corrosion, the repairs help ensure the State Theatre remains a prominent cultural landmark for future generations.
