Bridges Bridge structures provide a critical link between our communities and serve an important role in our nation's economy. It has been well documented that a significant portion of our bridges are in need of rehabilitation or replacement. Many of these structures are suffering from the effects of corrosion of reinforced concrete. Exposure to a marine environment in coastal areas or to the de-icing salts that keep our freeways safe for winter travel provide the source for aggressive chloride ions that will eventually initiate corrosion activity. Corrosion mitigation systems that extend the service life of these important structures are commonly used. Typical applications include Galvashield® XP or Galvashield® XP+ anodes to extend the life of patch repairs, expansion joint repairs, and to provide localized corrosion protection to construction joints created when bridges are widened. Galvashield® CC anodes are used to provide proactive corrosion control to pier caps, columns and precast/prestressed beam ends under expansion joints. Norcure® Chloride Extraction, one of the most significant technologies to come out of the FHWA Strategic Highway Research Program, addresses the root cause of the corrosion problem by significantly reducing the level of chlorides and leaving the structure in a long-term passive condition. For many structures, Galvanode® ASZ+ humectant activated zinc metalizing provides an economical method of extending the service life of bridge substructures by proving galvanic cathodic protection. Galvanode® DAS distributed anode system can be used to provide galvanic cathodic protection to bridge decks and to structures that are to be overlayed or jacketed with new concrete. Galvanode® Jackets are designed to provide one-step repair and protection of columns and piling in both marine and non-marine applications. |
