How Anodes Work
The Problem Repair of chloride-contaminated or carbonated concrete can create electrochemical incompatibilities leading to accelerated corrosion of the reinforcing steel in the surrounding concrete. The result is a new "hot spot" which may require additional patching in three to five years.
The Solution Galvanic anodes installed in the patch repair will corrode sacrificially, thus reducing the potential for new corrosion to develop on the reinforcing steel and mitigating existing corrosion problems. The result is an extension of service life for the patch repair.
How do Galvanic Anodes Work? When two dissimilar metals are coupled together in an electrolyte, the metal with the higher potential (more negative voltage) for corrosion will corrode in preference to the more noble metal. In concrete repair applications, the zinc core of the galvanic anode will corrode instead of the reinforcing steel, protecting the rebar from the damaging effects of corrosion.
