Project Description:
Corrosion of the reinforcing steel and the resulting spalling of concrete was detected in the concrete slab. After further investigation, it was determined that chlorides in the set accelerator during the original construction was the major cause of corrosion activity in the sterilization room floor.

Project Solution:
To repair the concrete slab, the engineer specified the full depth repair of a 20 by 25 foot section. After the damaged concrete was removed, embedded galvanic anodes were tied to the existing rebars at 30 inches on center around the perimeter of the full depth repair. After the new concrete was replaced, the embedded anodes provide corrosion protection to the remaining chloride-contaminated concrete to extend the service life of the repair.
