Bridge Deck Curb Rehabilitation Trans-Canada Highway Over Red River

Project Description:
Following inspection of the 1289 foot long four lane structure on the Trans Canada Highway over the Red River, curbs and walkways on the bridge were found to be corroding due to the use of de-icing salts. The bridge deck is protected from chlorides by the presence of a waterproof membrane and asphalt overlay. However, the curbs and walkways were left exposed to the elements and corroded over time due to chloride contamination.

Project Solution:
To minimize future maintenance costs due to corrosion, the Department of Highways & Transportation chose to incorporate the Galvashield®XP sacrificial anode system with their conventional concrete repair on the bridge. As an added benefit to the Department of Highways & Transportation, 8 anodes were specifically installed to be monitored over time.
