Galvanic protection systems utilize dissimilar metals to provide protection to embedded reinforcing steel. When two metals are coupled together in an electrolyte, the metal with the higher potential for corrosion (more electronegative) will corrode in preference to the more noble metal. In the case of concrete, zinc is used to provide galvanic protection to the steel. This type of system does not require on-going monitoring and is suitable for conventionally reinforced and prestressed/post-tensioned concrete.

Vector Galvashield® MA -
Activated Reinforced Zinc Mesh Overlay System for Galvanic Corrosion Protection of Concrete Structures

Vector Galvashield MA activated reinforced zinc mesh overlay system is used to provide galvanic corrosion protection to reinforced concrete structures that are subject to corrosive conditions. The system is based upon the installation of a reinforced zinc mesh anode onto the surface of the concrete structure to be protected. The anode system is electrically connected to the steel reinforcement and then overlayed with an activated mortar. When the system installation is complete, the thin overlay system provides long term corrosion protection.

Applications:

  • Vertical, overhead, and horizontal areas
  • Bridge decks and piers
  • Balcony decks and columns
  • Marine structures
  • Conventionally reinforced concrete
  • Prestressed/post-tensioned concrete
  • Features and Benefits

  • Galvanic protection - the system is self-powered and self-regulating. Requires no external power source.
  • Economical - quick, easy installation that requires no rectifier or extensive electrical work. Reinforced zinc mesh sheets are supplied with pre-installed wire connections for quick field installation.
  • Low maintenance - no electrical system to monitor and maintain after installation.
  • Versatile - can be used for both conventionally reinforced and prestressed or post-tensioned concrete.
  • Aesthetic finishes - thin galvanic overlay can be left exposed or covered with decorative floor and wall coatings, tile, or asphalt overlays.
  • Long service life - 15 to 40 year service life* depending on anode selection.

*As with all galvanic protection systems, service life is dependent upon a number of factors including reinforcing steel density, concrete conductivity, chloride concentration, humidity and anode selection.
